Engaged to be married

My Mother wasn’t ever sure she’d see the day. I think my Dad had given up all hope. It hadn’t crossed my mind in a while either, but then I met Laura.
After the best 18 months of my life, on the 12th of February 2012, I, Adam Welch asked Laura for her hand in marriage.
We had been talking about it for some time, but I always wanted to do things properly. I wanted to get the permission of Laura’s Dad. I wanted to have the perfect ring to hand, and I wanted it to be a surprise.
I was given the opportunity to have a few hours shopping on the Saturday, and so I had to use my time wisely. After much research on the internet at styles, metals, diamonds (and prices) I attacked at least seven jewellers in town with the simple task of finding ‘the ring’. After a good hour I found a small independent jewellers up a funny staircase, round a corner, behind a door. The shop in which moments later, I would find what I wanted.
I didn’t sleep that well that night. I worried if Laura wouldn’t like the ring as much as I did. I worried that I wouldn’t get everything right. I worried that I wouldn’t be able to get the words out. Most of all, I worried about asking Lauras Dad.
With the ring burning a metaphorical hole in my metaphorical pocket, I made some excuses the next morning to go to the supermarket. It was with great haste I drove to Laura’s parents house, to ask the second most important question of my life.
Both of Laura’s parents seemed to be overjoyed at the prospect of me being their son-in-law. Many hugs and kisses later, and my heart was beginning to return to something just a bit high of normal.
So I had got ‘the ring’, I’d got permission, I’d even managed to get Laura’s nails done without her realising. All I needed now was somewhere to pop the question. If I booked that lovely restaurant that Laura took me to for my birthday she’d know something was up, so I picked a more middle of the road venue. I wasn’t just trying to be cheap, I was genuinely trying to throw her off the scent! It was Italian though, and we both would really like to visit Tuscany one day. You’re believing me, right?
In the restaurant I was steering the conversation to our future. A new home together in a new town, years of happiness together. I then with shaking hand dug into my pocket, got out the ring and asked the question.
I didn’t however get on one knee. I was nervous enough, and didn’t fancy picking myself back up off the floor in front of all the diners if I tripped or simply collapsed with nerves. I kept my bum on a seat, I’m not daft. Thankfully Laura made me the happiest man alive and agreed to be my wife.
On returning home, we telephoned our parents and drank a bottle of Champagne, which had been ready on ice. It wasn’t long after this when Laura asked if she could update her status. I quote “The man has to ask the woman to marry him, the woman gets to update facebook.”
We plan to get married in May 2013, not far from where we live. My next job is to create a wedding website to tell you all how, where, when and with whom. Watch this space.
